Avulux Migraine Lenses
Avulux are the only clinically proven migraine and light sensitivity lenses on the market. Now available in polycarbonate at Laramy-K Optical lab in single vision, Integrity Series freeform lenses, and Chemistrie magnetic clip-ons. Learn more about how Avulux compares to FL-41 and other solutions below.
Migraines and light sensitivity affect millions of people, making daily tasks challenging and uncomfortable. Avulux migraine lenses provide a practical, non-invasive way to reduce these symptoms by addressing one of the most common triggers—light. By filtering specific wavelengths that can worsen migraines while allowing soothing light to pass through, these lenses help users regain comfort and focus in various environments.
What are Avulux Migraine Lenses?
Avulux migraine lenses are designed to help people with migraines and light sensitivity. These lenses use patented technology to filter blue, amber, and red light, known to trigger or worsen migraine symptoms.
At the same time, Avulux allows green light to pass through, creating a calming visual experience. Avulux lenses are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, offering a versatile solution for migraine management.
Elevate Patient Care and Grow Your Practice Through Migraine Sub-Specialty and Avulux Lenses from Laramy-K Optical Lab
Migraine is a genetic, neurological disease that affects nearly 48 million people in the United States – nearly 1 in 5 patients in your practice! Migraine has a significantly greater prevalence than other common conditions. Migraine management including Avulux migraine glasses represents an opportunity for ECPs to serve in the frontline of care for patients living with this debilitating condition.

How Avulux Compares to Other Migraine Glasses
Many migraine glasses are available on the market, promising relief from light sensitivity and migraine attacks. However, not all migraine glasses are created equal. Some migraine glasses include:
- Blue light-blocking glasses: Blue light filters are primarily designed to address digital eye strain. They block light in the 400–460 nm range but not in the painful upper blue range of 450–500 nm or the amber range of 550–600 nm.
- FL-41 lenses: FL-41 glasses were created in the ‘80s to help manage sensitivity to fluorescent office lights. They were not designed for migraine relief and only block a narrow band of light in the 480–520 nm range. They do not block light in the red and amber wavelengths.
- Tinted sunglasses: Dark orange, red, blue, or green tints may help reduce the effects of harsh light but do not help with migraine relief.
- Avulux lenses: Avulux uses a multi-band optical filter designed to reduce photophobia and migraine pain.
How Do Avulux Lenses Work?
Avulux lenses work by selectively filtering light wavelengths that are linked to migraine symptoms. The lenses block blue, amber, and red light, which can overstimulate the brain and worsen discomfort during a migraine. At the same time, they allow green light to pass through, which research shows can have a soothing effect on the brain. This balance helps reduce light sensitivity while creating a more comfortable visual experience.
Are Avulux Lenses Effective for Migraines? The Science Behind Avulux
Avulux lenses have been proven effective through multiple studies aimed at addressing migraines and light sensitivity. A 2016 study tested lenses with optical notch filters designed to block specific wavelengths of light, including blue (480 nm) and orange (620 nm). Surprisingly, even the lenses initially considered "sham" filters provided measurable therapeutic benefits, demonstrating the potential of targeted light filtration in reducing migraine symptoms. These findings became the foundation for developing the advanced Avulux lenses.
The study had subjects with migraine placed in a dark room. The subjects were then intermittently exposed to varying colors of light (white, blue, green, amber, and red) and assessed for:
- Intensity of their headache
- Throbbing sensation
- Muscle tenderness
- Cephalic areas (areas on the head) affected by the pain.
Findings:
The researchers found that white, blue, amber, and red light increased the subjects’ headache pain intensity, while green light was shown to reduce pain intensity.
In 2020, an independent double-blind, randomized trial tested Avulux’s new multi-band precision optical filter. These lenses block blue, amber, and red light while allowing green light to pass through, a wavelength known to have a calming effect. The trial confirmed that Avulux lenses significantly reduced migraine symptoms compared to a clear placebo lens. These results demonstrate that Avulux lenses offer a reliable, non-invasive solution for migraine relief by targeting and managing light triggers effectively.
